Journalism

TIME magazine is known for their inspirational covers to this day. I can remember to this day as far back as I can being a kid and seeing my parents reading TIME magazine. I was so intrigued by the covers that I can remember them vividly.

This topic is an interesting one for me considering my major is photo journalism. I always have loved looking through magazines looking for pictures that would catch my eye. Typically TIME magazine covers range from a political cartoon to a persons face or a landscape view. Rarely ever do the covers have just a picture. They always seem to have something that completely grabs the attention of the reader.

TIME is known so greatly for their covers that they have a website dedicated directly to their covers. There is a database even where you can look up a cover here- http://content.time.com/time/coversearch/

TIME magazine seems to always attract a wide variety of people. I think that is why the magazine is so popular in the first place. It does not just attract one group of people. It is a magazine for everyone and anyone to read.

Networks

Once speaking to some family members who are the generation before me, I can clearly see the difference and impact changes that networking has done today. Back in the day, the radio was the main source for information. My dad would listen to sports games on the radio, news, anything really. Now a days we just turn on a TV or even just look at our cell phones to figure out whats going on.

It was a little more difficult back then trying to look up a news event. Now a days you can just simply google the event and theres pages upon pages of information about that specific event. The quality of the news that is on a station like ABC and CBS is relatively the same and plays the same idea of news where as CNN and FOX is a more newer view of news.

When I talked to my parents about news events it was very word of mouth when they were younger. Kind of like the luck of the draw whoever heard what was going on at a specific moment through the radio or whoever would transfer their findings to other people to get the word around.

News today is a lot more easier to hear about than it used to be. The internet has given the news a whole other way to produce news and get the word out.

Interactive Media

This day in age, magazines have turned into more than just reading and entertainment. They have become one of the most popular places to put an advertisement. Almost every page in a magazine has some type of advertisement even if its just on the sides of pages or across the top. Some advertisements fill up to an entire page or even two.

Depending on which type of magazine it is, all advertisements are different. If you are reading Cosmopolitan you would find more advertisements along the lines of beauty. perfume, fitness, make up, nail polish, anything that has to do with women and beauty. The same thing goes to mens magazines like Esquire for example. The advertisements track a certain audience depending on what they are reading. A health magazine for women wouldn't put in a fragrance for men advertising it that wouldn't be targeting the right audience.

I think advertisements now a days are turning into the whole magazine. They most definitely influence the content in a magazine and turn that magazine into a book of advertisements with some actual information to go with the magazine. There should be a limit for magazines and how many advertisements are allowed to go into them because it seems like it is a coupon book or something every time I look in one. I do enjoy reading magazines but they have turned more and more into advertisements than an actual magazine.
