Radio Life

Being from music city and all, there are tons of different radio stations competing to be on top. From country to rock n' roll Nashville has a broad selection of diverse stations.

A list of some of the more popular stations in Nashville are....
-95.5 WSM FM. This radio station plays country music from "the 90s to now" and is also called "Americas Radio Station"
-88.7 Way FM. This station is a Christian Hit Radio which offers top christian music of the day and much more. Has links to much more Christian related resources.
-100.1 WRLT aka "Lightning 100". This is Nashville's alternative adult radio featuring Contemporary adult and folk plus much more.
-107.5 The River which is Nashville's popular choice featuring Rap, Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, and much more.

There are many more stations around the Nashville area but those are the general ones. 107.5 always has booths set up during music events around the city. I have seen all types of radio stations but there surprisingly is a lot of diversity in the music business. People just seem to think its only country because that is what Nashville is known for.

There are applications like Pandora, Spotify, and 8 Tracks that have semi taken over the radio industry. There is something called iHeart Radio which is an internet radio platform owned by iHeart Media Inc. You can create your own radio stations and pick from 15 million free songs or tune into thousands of shows as well. The ironic thing about iHeart radio is that 107.5 always advertises for them.

Online radios and applications are a great idea for alternatively listening to music. You can be anywhere and still be able to catch up with your favorite radio station.

Print Media : The Tennessean

One of the more popular newspapers that I am familiar with is The Tennessean. Growing up, my parents have always gotten that select newspaper. We also get the USA Today but I decided to focus this post mainly on The Tennessean. I have looked up the online version as well as the paper copy. The online version has tabs including all different sections and categories. I personally have always had a hard time trying to find certain sections in newspapers but when I just went onto the online version it was a lot easier for me to get around. Tabs include: counties, sports, business, travel, lifestyle, music and opinion.

The home page has a 'TopNews' section on the right side. Top news stories include sports information all the way to talking about the housing markets in Nashville. My parents have both told me that they like feeling the newspaper in their hands while reading it. Though they also said whenever they get on the internet it is hard for them to stay away from going to google news etc. They have told me that they don't read The Tennessean online though.

My family still uses their technology just like anyone else would, but they still love a quiet morning holding a physical newspaper in their hands. When I asked them if they would ever switch to just online there was no changing their minds. The cool thing you see about printed news is that it can literally be there forever in stone, in person. Sure you can google any article but it just isn't the same.

Its a lot different now with newspapers, but one thing for sure is the Nash household will forever be #TeamNewspaper

Do movies help books?

When any new movie comes out these days its either created from a book, or not. Mainly, the question asked by others if a movie is inspired from a book is, "Oh, did you read the book or are you just going to see the movie?"

For me it just depends. The top 20 movies of this past year in my opinion are:
20. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
19. Neighbors
18. Sin City
17. The Amazing Spider Man 2
16. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
15. Transformers: Age of Extinction
14. Maleficient
13. Into the Storm
12. Godzilla
11. Divergent
10. The Hunger Games : Mocking Jay
9. Lucy
8. Expandables 3
7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
6. If I Stay
5. The Other Woman
4. Guardians of the Galaxy
3. Sin City : A Dame to Kill For
2. The Giver
1. The Fault in our Stars

Most of these movies listed are either created from comics, or books. Only a select few aren't. The ones that are based on comics are, Captain America, The Amazing Spider Man 2, Transformers, Godzilla, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Guardians of the Galaxy. The ones that are based from books are Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Hunger Games Mocking Jay, Sin City, The Giver, and The Fault in our Stars.

Its crazy to me to think that almost all the movies now a days are produced from books or other readings. One that stands out to me personally the most would be The Fault in our Stars. I read the book and it was absolutely incredible. The author, John Green was actually part of the movie crew so he made it as much like the book as possible. I did like the book better but it was so cool to see the characters come to life. The movie actually made the book more popular because people would hear about it coming out and want to read the book before they see the movie. Thats what I like doing. I think it helps both the sales of movies and books.

Movies like Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and Twilight were extreme famous before their movies came out. Now I feel like some movies that come out make the book more popular. Its great publicity for a book. Almost like they are a tag team trying to help out sales for both categories.

I also think that movies can bring a book back into the eyes of viewers. For example, The Giver was a book that came out in 1993 and just now the movie is out. It brought back much needed attention because maybe once viewers see the movie they will want to read the book. With that being said, I really do feel like movies that come out about books help the books publicity as well as book being made from movies.

12 hours, no media

As the twelve hours without media finally pass I open my phone to 14 missed calls, 27 text messages and god knows how many twitter and instagram notifications. My first thought: 'ugh, what did I miss out on?'. It was a very stressful day to say the least. My roommate was suppose to pick me up from class today (it was pouring) but she had a meeting with her advisor that she had forgot about. So, I got to stand in the rain waiting for her arrival before realizing she wasn't coming. The walk home from the rain was extremely unfortunate to say the least.

I ate lunch alone because I couldn't find out where any of my friends were. I felt so out of place in the world. I kept remembering things I wanted to check all day, I would grab my phone just out of a natural habit and realize I can't use it. It was an all day thing for me. As I was walking around seeing everyones head automatically looking down at a cell phone I almost felt like I was missing out on everything that was going on over social media. As angry as I was with it, it opened my eyes so much. It really is sad on how much we depend on media these days. If its this bad already I can't imagine how it will be when we are older and have kids of our own.

I think what effected my daily life the most was feeling so out of the loop. My friends were all hanging out and I couldn't figure out which room they were in because I wasn't able to get in touch with them. I wanted to constantly check twitter and instagram to see whats going on. It drove me crazy.

12 hours without media was terrifying for me, but it helped me realize how dependent I am on it. I really need to work on not being so caught up in social media because it isn't everything. Its just the only thing that college students these days seem to connect on. It makes people feel in the loop. I think media can be incredibly good but at the same time it can effect the way we communicate in this world today.
