Do movies help books?

When any new movie comes out these days its either created from a book, or not. Mainly, the question asked by others if a movie is inspired from a book is, "Oh, did you read the book or are you just going to see the movie?"

For me it just depends. The top 20 movies of this past year in my opinion are:
20. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
19. Neighbors
18. Sin City
17. The Amazing Spider Man 2
16. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
15. Transformers: Age of Extinction
14. Maleficient
13. Into the Storm
12. Godzilla
11. Divergent
10. The Hunger Games : Mocking Jay
9. Lucy
8. Expandables 3
7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
6. If I Stay
5. The Other Woman
4. Guardians of the Galaxy
3. Sin City : A Dame to Kill For
2. The Giver
1. The Fault in our Stars

Most of these movies listed are either created from comics, or books. Only a select few aren't. The ones that are based on comics are, Captain America, The Amazing Spider Man 2, Transformers, Godzilla, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Guardians of the Galaxy. The ones that are based from books are Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Hunger Games Mocking Jay, Sin City, The Giver, and The Fault in our Stars.

Its crazy to me to think that almost all the movies now a days are produced from books or other readings. One that stands out to me personally the most would be The Fault in our Stars. I read the book and it was absolutely incredible. The author, John Green was actually part of the movie crew so he made it as much like the book as possible. I did like the book better but it was so cool to see the characters come to life. The movie actually made the book more popular because people would hear about it coming out and want to read the book before they see the movie. Thats what I like doing. I think it helps both the sales of movies and books.

Movies like Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and Twilight were extreme famous before their movies came out. Now I feel like some movies that come out make the book more popular. Its great publicity for a book. Almost like they are a tag team trying to help out sales for both categories.

I also think that movies can bring a book back into the eyes of viewers. For example, The Giver was a book that came out in 1993 and just now the movie is out. It brought back much needed attention because maybe once viewers see the movie they will want to read the book. With that being said, I really do feel like movies that come out about books help the books publicity as well as book being made from movies.
